ACTION 5: Write to your politicians

Time required: 15 minutes

On 25 June, write to your elected representatives urging them to join the global network of Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament and to take concrete steps to advance a nuclear weapons convention. Help put disarmament on the political agenda.

Parliamentarians around the world have a vital role to play in nuclear disarmament. Several national legislatures have already adopted resolutions calling for the immediate commencement of negotiations on a nuclear weapons convention. More need to follow suit. To find the contact details of your local members of parliament, visit the legislature's website. Here are some examples:

Sample letter

Dear Member of Parliament,

I am writing to you as a constituent concerned about the urgent need to eliminate nuclear weapons. Despite the end of the Cold War more than two decades ago, there are still some 20,000 nuclear weapons in the world. A single nuclear bomb is powerful enough to obliterate an entire city. The only guarantee against the use of these immoral, illegal and inhuman devices is to eliminate them now.

Roughly two-thirds of the world's governments, along with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, have called for the immediate commencement of negotiations on a comprehensive treaty prohibiting the use, production and stockpiling of nuclear weapons, and providing for their elimination within an agreed timeframe. A number of national legislatures have also passed resolutions backing such a treaty.

I encourage you to join the global network of Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (PNND), if you are not already a member: http://www.pnnd.org. The network of over 700 parliamentarians in 75 nations provides up-to-date information on nuclear weapons policies and facilitates engagement in nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament initiatives. Please also sign on to the PNND statement supporting a nuclear weapons convention.

Yours sincerely,
